Safe, Effective and Drug Free
Are you looking for a safe and effective way to support your health and comfort level throughout your pregnancy, labor and delivery? I have over a decade of experience using acupuncture to bringing ease and comfort to women during pregnancy.
“I started seeing Kate for acupuncture during my first pregnancy. In the beginning she helped with mood swings and irritableness, in the middle for sciatica and calm and toward the end with relaxation, mental and physical readiness and assistance to bring on labor. After my baby was born she also did some points to assist with lactation and baby massage.” ~ A.W.H.
Acupuncture started in China and has been used for over 3,000 years to treat women during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. It is a safe and effective modality for strengthening both mother and baby. Studies have proven that, acupuncture is effective in treating many of the issues that can arise during pregnancy()()(). Thin needles are used to manipulate the body’s energy, removing blockages, strengthening and bringing balance to all of the body’s systems, during this important time.
“I began seeing Kate when I was 36 weeks pregnant. My goal was a natural and unmedicated birth. Kate was knowledgeable about studies where acupuncture helped women in their final weeks of pregnancy. I had 4 visits leading up to delivering my healthy daughter at 41 weeks. 10 hours start to finish. No drugs. Postpartum, my confidence in Kate grew even more, as she helped me through a mysterious and unrelenting cough and general new mom fatigue. I now recommend acupuncture and specifically Kate as a practitioner to expecting moms, neighbors and friends!” ~ K.R.
Have you ever thought of pregnancy as an opportunity to improve your own health?
If you haven’t been able to find the strength and willpower to make the dietary and lifestyle choices you know would benefit your health e.g., cutting back on caffeine and alcohol, eating a more balanced diet, exercising, getting enough sleep, etc. Perhaps being pregnant will give you the needed inspiration to make these changes. For better or for worse, American society has evolved in a way that sets high expectations for women to carry on as “normal” during their pregnancy. With the current maternity leave laws and the financial commitments that most families have, many if not most pregnant women work right up until they go into labor and return to work before they are fully recovered. Given this situation, it is more important than ever to make the most of what diet, herbs, lifestyle and complementary therapies have to offer. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum recovery are understood as a window of opportunity to improve a women’s wellbeing. On the other hand, if a woman neglects her own health during pregnancy, health issues that develop may continue long after her baby is born. Acupuncture works beautifully as a form of preventative care as well as a solution to problems as they occur before and after the birth.
“I started receiving acupuncture treatments from Kate Kellogg when I was pregnant with my second child. Acupuncture made a big difference in how I felt – the general aches and pains of third trimester were greatly reduced.” ~ L.F.

Nausea and Vomiting
Although “morning sickness” is a natural occurrence in pregnancy for many women, acupuncture can help reduce both the severity and incidence of nausea and vomiting.
Muscular – Skeletal Pain
Back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel, rib pain, headaches and symphysis pubis pain are all common occurrences in pregnancy. Acupuncture can safely and effectively relive or reduce these symptoms.
Acupuncture can play an important role in helping to reduce high blood pressure, allowing a pregnancy to continue to full term. It is especially effective if treatment is begun as soon as hypertension has been diagnosed.
Breech and Posterior Babies
A simple and painless technique called moxibustion, when applied to a specific acupuncture point, has demonstrated a significant effect in helping to turn breech babies. The treatment helps to create optimal conditions in the mother that invite the baby to turn head down. This technique can also be used when a baby is in a posterior position.
Routine Labor Preparation
Acupuncture is a wonderful source of support in the final weeks of pregnancy, helping the body to relax and open to prepare for labor and delivery. Research has indicated that weekly acupuncture treatments beginning at 37 weeks of pregnancy, can reduce the need for medical intervention including medical induction and cesarean section. Weekly pre-labor acupuncture in the three to four weeks leading up to the due date, help to prepare the pelvis and cervix and create optimal conditions in the mother to prepare for a smooth labor and delivery. Acupuncture also helps to reduce stress hormones which can slow labor initiation.
After the hard work of labor and delivery is over, a mother can experience new challenges that come with the adjustment of caring for a newborn. As such, a woman’s mind, body and spirit can often use some assistance in adjusting to this new phase of life. Acupuncture offers a nourishing treatment that helps to rebuild qi (energy) and blood, balance hormones, calm nerves and lift the spirit. Milk letdown and production can be effectively aided with acupuncture.
Acupressure for pain relief during labor
Acupressure offers a drug free alternative for pain relief, and a smooth progression throughout labor and delivery. Kate offers trainings for professional and lay support people wishing to learn how to apply acupressure during labor and delivery.
